Manage Template Variants and Presets

Template variants let you configure different design resources, rulesets, and project files for each Variant within a single template. For example, a template might use different design libraries for English and German variants, or different master pages for print and digital variants.

Add variants to a template

To assign one or more variants to a template:

  1. Open the template you want to edit or create a new template.
  2. Navigate to the Variants tab in the template form.
  3. In the Variant(s) dropdown, select one or more variants to assign to this template.
  4. Click Add (or the equivalent action) to confirm your selection.

Each selected variant now appears in a separate Preset per variant section. It is optional to configure a preset for each variant — if you don't set variant-specific options, the template will use the base preset settings.

Configure presets for static content template variants

For each variant in a static content template, you can configure:

  1. Open the Preset per variant section for the variant you want to configure.
  2. Set the following options (all optional):
    • Master page: Select a different master page for this variant (e.g., a master page with different margins for a different language).
    • Design library: Select a different design library for this variant (e.g., a library with translated or region-specific design elements).
    • Static content ruleset: Select a different ruleset for this variant (e.g., a ruleset with variant-specific formatting or content logic).
  3. Save the template.

The variant now uses the preset you configured. If you do not configure a preset for a variant, the template falls back to the base preset settings defined in the Preset tab.

Configure presets for dynamic content template variants

For each variant in a dynamic content template, you can configure:

  1. Open the Preset per variant section for the variant you want to configure.
  2. Set the following options (all optional):
    • Project file: Select a different After Effects project file or HTML project file for this variant (depending on your template type).
    • Dynamic content ruleset: Select a different ruleset for this variant.
  3. Save the template.

The variant now uses the preset you configured. If you do not configure a preset for a variant, the template falls back to the base preset settings defined in the Preset tab.

Remove a variant from a template

To remove a variant from a template:

  1. Open the template for editing.
  2. Navigate to the Variants tab.
  3. In the Variant(s) dropdown, unselect the variant you want to remove.
  4. The Preset per variant section for that variant is removed.
  5. Save the template.

The variant is no longer assigned to this template. Other templates, campaigns, and publications that use this variant are not affected.
